First Draft

First Draft

Most of us once noticed that we are getting in trouble when there is a pressure to think more creatively. For example, in the school, when we draw an imaginary picture, it is very difficult to decide what to draw because there are some burden to be unique and different from others. Why are you still suffering from thinking creative? Recently, many schools encourage creative classroom and innovative education but students remain as they are. There, I wonder if we really become creative by education. Think it this way - is everyone can become creative? Many of you are trying to make your children be creative by teaching playing the piano and drawing but are they all creative? May be you couldn't say yes. Although we emphasize being creative, creativity is not learned.

We confront many difficulties throughout the life and we continuously find out solutions to deal with those matters. This, however, is not always possible. All we once have had difficulty finding solutions. In this circumstances, 'creativity' can solve the problem. Creativity is a mental characteristic that allows a person to think outside of the box, which results in innovative or different approaches to a particular task. With only this definition, you can notice its existence. How this ability express its magnificent in dealing problem? Actually, there are 7 steps to solve problem. First, find the right problems to solve. Second, define the problem. Third, analyse the problem. Then, develop opportunities. Select the best solution and implement. Lastly, evaluate and learn what was effective in solving problem. If you want to do well in these steps, you should use your creativity.

Many of us don't have doubt on the creativity and they just want to know how to develop it. This is common phenomenon because we often think highly of something novel and innovative. As we have eager to be better than others, their desires to be creative also increase and this reflects today's society encouraging novelty. However, we don't pay much attention to the basic question. Are they sure it is possible to learn becoming creative? If there is no problem, why can't everyone reveals that ability? Though these considerations, I thought that we need to take this more seriously.

Though 'creativity' has diverse opinions upon its possibility to develop, it is quite easy to discover examples that will support my arguments. If a person can be taught how to think creatively, everyone can become like Einstein and Shakespeare. Almost every one will accept that it can't be. Then I'll give you some examples to help your understanding on this. Most of you have once learned playing the piano, usually by your parents' purpose to bring up your creativity. However, you all become pianists? Also, if you know how to deal with lumber and tools, can you make magnificent chairs that are greatly appreciated by others? No, actually you can't. In addition, from creative writing professor Hanif Kureishi, some students don't know how to write a story, even though they took creative writing class altogether. Then he said that such kind of lecture is "a waste of time". This is because they are not natural writers.

Most are not very aware the concept of creativity, but it is important when you understand this arguments. Creativity is not a discipline, but a kind of personal characteristic. Also, It is not a conventional 'skill' like playing the piano and making furniture, as I already said above, that you can pay to have taught to you. Instead, you have to know that we all possess creativity but its degree is different. These difference make gap between normal people and famous artists. People should recognize that they have contradictory attitude toward 'teaching creative' that they try to make their children become more creative and accept its impossibility at once. As everyone has their own amount of creative ability, we don't know who have outstanding ability. However, those examples and expert opinion are showing that teaching creativity is impossible.

I have many supporters for my arguments but there are some opponents at the same time like all stuff always have both different opinions. Some are say that they can improve one's creativity by providing proper environment. They also stated that they can technically bring up creativity in some parts. It is true because no one knows who have innate ability to become prodigy. However, It does not always happen. This indicates that creativity is eventually not the thing that can be developed. They are just given information that let them know how to use 'tools', not an ability to 'think creatively'. That is, opponents' have no direct connection in teaching creativity.

It is sometimes common, or sometimes unfamiliar to deal with creativity. This is because we often overlook its properties. People have unconscious mind that they can develop their ability to be more creative so they look for 'creative class' and 'creative teaching'. However, I don't agree with this. Everyone has creativity but its degree is all different to individual and not always creative teaching method is directly related to creative results. That is, we cannot learn to be creative. Recently, society require to be more innovative and ingenious. If you have deep consideration on this argument and correctly understand about our limitation of creativity, you can obtain what our society expect to you.

The Conclusion

My Conclusion

It is sometimes common, or sometimes unfamiliar to deal with creativity. This is because we often overlook its properties. People have unconscious mind that they can develop their ability to be more creative so they look for 'creative class' and 'creative teaching'. However, I don't agree with this. Everyone has creativity but its degree is all different to individual and not always creative teaching method is directly related to creative results. That is, we cannot learn to be creative. If you have deep consideration on this argument and correctly understand about our limitation of creativity, you can obtain what our society expect to you.

Refutation and Concession

1. What is my thesis?
Creativity is not be learned or taught.

2. What is the opposite position?
Creativity is learned or taught.

3. What arguments can I anticipate?
1) providing proper environment

4. How will I counter those arguments?
1) by saying that environment is not directly related to improve creativity. As I previously stated, each person has different amount of ability to reveal their creativity. I will explain that limitation and confirm my arguments with people's contradictory behavior.

The Confirmation

1. What is my thesis?
Creativity is not be learned or taught.

2. What types of source am I using to defend my thesis?
I am mostly using articles described by expert in psychology.

3. Are my arguments mostly based on evidence, logic or emotion?
I can say that my arguments have some evidences because the sources are based on psychology paper. I also present logic statement when I explain examples from daily lives.

My Confirmation

Though 'creativity' has diverse opinions upon its possibility to develop, it is quite easy to discover examples that will support my arguments. If a person can be taught how to think creatively, everyone can become like Einstein and Shakespeare. Almost every one will accept that it can't be. The Narration

My persuasive argument thesis is : Creativity is not be learned and taught.

1. What do people already know about my topic?

People usually have no regard on pressure and encouragement from others. For example,  they take for granted to be forced to think in different way, that is, thinking creatively. Most of them have no doubt that everyone can learn how to become creative.

2. What research has already been done about my topic?
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/imagine/201104/can-creativity-be-taught - good explaining limitation of teaching creativity.

http://journograds.com/2014/06/11/can-creativity-be-taught/ - giving several examples to support my topic.

http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140314-learn-to-be-creative - including opposite point of my argument, which is useful for refutation.

3. What are the implications of my argument (What if I'm right? What if I'm right and people ignore me?)
If my argument is well understood, I can contribute people to think about what is creativity and how they can deal with that matter better.

My Narration

The Introduction

Most of us once noticed that we are getting in trouble when there is a pressure to think more creatively. For example, in the school, when we draw an imaginary picture, it is very difficult to decide what to draw because there are some burden to be unique and different from others. Although we emphasize being creative, creativity is not learned.

1. Attention grabber -
I attracted the audience by reminding a familiar experience of them, especially in school. Then I focused on the fact that they have not noticed - make them think carefully about on the topic.

2. Explains the topic -
I explained the topic by questioning about our experience. I also introduce common behavior - teaching instruments - to help understand the topic.

3. My thesis -
It is clear argument. Likewise what I thought at first, "Is creativity able to be learned?"

Can you learn to be creative?
http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140314-learn-to-be-creative

My Topic :
Creativity is not a thing that can be learned or taught.

What I hope to learn from this source :
I want to find more details that might help me develop my topic and new sources that will provide supporting evidences of this argument.

Notes :

1. The belief that schools are failing to nurture creative skills has grown in recent years. (because of current school system but this is not very related to my topic)

2. This source is more proper for refutation in opposite side.

3. Alex Osborn, an advertising executive suggested a method for creative thinking. That was brainstorming.

4. Students who are taking creative studies courses  learn thinking creatively through 4 stages : clarifying, ideating, developing and implementing.

Final Thoughts :
This source would not be supportive for my argument but might be useful when I research on opposite side. I need some more novel idea. No more one says that examples of creativity as an tools.

Can Creativity Be Taught?
http://journograds.com/2014/06/11/can-creativity-be-taught/

My Topic :
We cannot find ourselves creative by just learning certain skills or someone's pressure.

What I hope to learn from this source :
I want to know how to define properties of 'creativity' and scientific evidence which can explain impossibility of its learning.

Notes :
1. Case for creative writing based on the remarks made by Mr. Hanif Kureishi, a lecturer in Creative Writing at Kingston University.

2. Creative writing courses are 'a waste of time'

3. Creativity is kind a personal characteristic, not a discipline.

4. It is not a conventional 'skill' like plumbing and baking that you can pay to have taught to you.

5. We all possess creativity but different in its degree.

6. Even though the writing class teaches how to find the science of putting ideas onto paper, some of them still have no idea how to write a story. Cause they are not natural writers (I will add this part to examples previously found.)

Final Thoughts :
This source gives another example that it is impossible to teach creativity. I need more interesting and novel evidence that is proven.

Classical Argument Outline

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.

I will start by illustrating familiar situation that is probable for almost everybody. For example, people are usually getting in trouble when they have to think in different way. Or, we can often see that some are trying to make their children creative, teaching playing the piano and drawing. I will make them have question here : Do you think that creativity can be taught?

2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what's at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.

I will give general opinions and conventional aspects on this argument by summarizing researches that I've done. Using statistics and cases of experiments, I will suggest that there are also different point of view contrast to common knowledge.

3. The confirmation, which lays out in a logical order (usually strongest to weakest or most obvious to most subtle) the claims that support the thesis, providing evidence for each claim.

I will suggest weak points of those who exclaim that they can become creative through learning certain skills. I will examine several examples that creativity is not an ability that can be taught. I will describe the facts that are proved officially that it is impossible to teach creativity directly and there for I will make a firm my argument.

4. The refutation and concession, which looks at opposing viewpoints to the writer's claims, anticipating objections from the audience, and allowing as much of the opposing viewpoints as possible without weakening the thesis.

I will concede that technically we can improve creativity, but I will refute to this with the phrase "a waste of time". For example, in a literature, though students learned how to write a story, they cannot become writers who we called them "creative" like Shakespeare. Then, I will focus on the opinion that everyone has creativity in mind in varying degrees.

5. The summation, which provides a strong conclusion, amplifying the force of the argument, and showing the readers that this solution is the best at meeting the circumstances.

I will conclude with a brief summary of my entire points then arouse people to agonize that we need to have doubt on this area, creativity. After I will end with a reconfirmation of my thesis.

Articulation

1) My argument
I want to argue that creativity can't be taught intentionally. We often emphasize that we need to be more creative and innovative to live better. As for students, sometimes, they are forced to think more creative or, without existing ideas and some of them are tormented by that pressure. Inspired by this situation, I want to argue whether creativity is an ability that can be taught.

2) How I found my argument.
I usually have complaints with teachers forcing students to think in creative ways. What is creative to some can't creative to others. I think it's a matter of different perspective. Then, I started wondering where our creativity comes from. Is it innated?, or nurtured? This can be helpful for me to explain issue on the creativity from "innate"
side of view. As I continuing researching, I could find many diverse opinions about 'creativity' and I finally decided to argue that creativity can not be taught with those opinions and my experiences.

3) New research questions
I have some questions that need to be challenged.
a) What is engaged in creative thinking?
b) How can I explain creativity of "creative" people like famous artists
I need to browse more information about process of creative thinking and look for more persuasive supports like an experiment.

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler
This argument is quite related to the Harvard Sampler. In the text, the author noted which one is nature and which one is nurtured and I wondered what area is proper for 'creativity'.

Can Creativity Be Taught?
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/imagine/201104/can-creativity-be-taught

My topic :
Creativity can not be taught.

What I hope to learn from this source :
I want to find some examples to explain my topic logically or get more ideas to support the topic and figure out more plausible reasons. Especially,

Notes :
1. Foundational tools for imaginative and creative thinking can be exercised in classroom teaching. Classroom curricula can promote and sustain nurturing environments for creativity but creativity itself cannot be taught.
'It is not enough to make creative outcome by just knowing how to use the tools for creative thinking'

2. Not everyone can make magnificent chairs though he or she knows how to make it.

3. Creative process(how to construct ideas) can be taught by imitating or emulating others' behavior. (I found new concept, 'creative process' here)

4. This process (creative process) does not guarantee a creative result.

5. It can be accumulated as a good strategies for solving problem.

6. Creativity only manifests when a person with the right sets of skills and knowledge invents or finds an appropriate problem that cannot be solved using any existing approach, but which is amenable to solution by that person's unique set of experiences.

7. No one knows who can reach that part.

Final Thoughts :
This sources gives general idea on the topic but I think I have to find more ideas with specific digits or experiments. Those can support me better. And with the sixth note, I want to figure out how creativity is manifested.
